From April 5-11 2010, the ISHA (International Students of History Association) Annual Conference in Helsinki will take a place. During the ISHA Annual Conference, the Finnish History Teachers Association will organise a Round-Table for History Teachers within the EUROCLIO Project “Connecting Europe through history: Experiences and Perceptions of Migrations in Europe” where ISHA is involved as a Project Partner will take place. The aim of that event is to improve the mutual understanding among the European citizens. Approximately, 100 participants are expected to attend the Conference and discuss the impact of different minorities on European integration. During several workshops many standpoints will be presented, so that The Conference will be beneficial to all its attendees; from students of History Education who will be provided with information about multicultural Europe to migrant NGO’s who will be able to find a stage for their migrant histories. Connecting Event in Paris, France

On Wednesday 17 March 2010 83 people attended the seminar ‘History of Migrations in France and Europe: which challenges for the classrooms?’ which EUROCLIO organised in Paris thanks to a successful and unique partnership with the Cité nationale de l’histoire de l’immigration (CNHI) where the event took place, the French Association of History and Geography Teachers (APHG) which is a member of EUROCLIO, and the National Institute for Pedagogical Research (INRP). This seminar is part of the EUROCLIO project Connecting Europe through History which consists of a series of events in more than 10 European countries on the experiences and perceptions of migrations. The audience, consisting mainly of French teachers, members of the educational staff, researchers, students and representatives of associations, showed a great interest in the European comparisons offered thanks to contributions from Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Denmark and Germany (see programme). A diversity of studies on the way the history of migration is taught in Europe have been presented and discussed during the seminar, some analyzing the textbooks, some others the curricula, and in the case of France even the classroom practices. Case studies and pedagogical projects have also been introduced to the participants as sources of inspiration and a way to make them aware of the educational challenges which the history of migrations involves nowadays.

‘Connecting Europe through History – Experiences and Perceptions of Migrations in Europe’ in Berlin

On Friday 29th January 2010 the second public event within the EUROCLIO Project “Connecting Europe through History – Experiences and Perceptions of Migrations in Europe” sponsored by Education and Culture DG by ‘Europe for Citizens’ Programme, took place at the Freie Universität in Berlin, Germany. Experts in the field of History and Migration Education from Germany, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, the Netherlands, Morocco, Latvia, Turkey, Denmark, Bosnia and Macedonia exchanged views on Migration and how it is being taught with History Students of the Freie Universität who contributed to the overall event with Poster Presentations on projects focused on intercultural dialogue and inclusion. The participants met to discuss the challenge of teaching history to students who do not share the same historical background, compare how the history of migrants is thought in various settings and share ideas and experiences on the teaching of history of migrants across disciplines.

A seminar on ‘History of Migrations in France and Europe’

On Wednesday 17 March 2010, the Palais de la Porte Dorée in Paris will host a seminar on ‘History of Migrations in France and Europe: which challenges for the classrooms?’. EUROCLIO organizes this event jointly with the ‘Cite Nationale de l’Histoire de l’Immigration’ (CNHI), the French Association of History and Geography Teachers (APHG) and the National Institute for Pedagogical Resources (INRP). Connecting History in Berlin

After a successful kick-off in Cracow, Poland in October 2009, the second event within the EUROCLIO Project “Connecting Europe through History – Experiences and Perceptions of Migrations” takes place in Berlin, January on January 29-31 2010 and will be hosted by the Freie Universität Berlin. EUROCLIO with the Project Partners EVROPAEVM and the International Students of History Association are preparing an inspiring Programme with a roundtable discussion focused on the challenge of teaching history to students who do not share the same historical background where teachers will be involved and share their experiences with students of the Freie Universität Berlin. Benny Christensen and Agnete Holst Anderson, representatives of the Danish History Teachers Association will give a good insight into the way the History of Migrants is being taught in Denmark, while Annemarie Cottaar will enlighten the participants on the Project “Moroccan Pioneers in the Netherlands”. A series of events is planned for the year to come and more information will be published on the Project Page on the EUROCLIO Website and at the Project Website will be launched in January 2010 including information on the upcoming events and reports from the ones already carried out. Kick-off in Cracow

The new EUROCLIO Project “Connecting Europe through History – Experiences and Perceptions of Migrations in Europe” has taken off with the first of a series of international events scheduled within the Project during 2009-2010. The seminar took place in Cracow, Poland on October 16th-18th at the Institute of European Studies, Jagiellonian University and brought together history teachers, representatives of the DG Enlargement of the European Commission and students attending the EVROPAEVM Graduate Workshop “Europeanisation in Central and Eastern Europe: How have the new member states changed?” EUROCLIO Partners in this Project, Dr. Paul Flather (EVROPAEVM), Frerik Kampman and Marko Halonen (International Students of History Association-ISHA) engaged the participants from Poland and beyond in a Round Table discussion on “Migration as a Theme in History Teaching”. Issues on which extent has migration been integrated into the national curriculum in Poland, how much nationalistic or politically coloured versions of the past affect the Polish teachers and the different perspectives on the topic in other countries than Poland were addressed. A good insight was gained into what has changed in teaching about Migration after the fall of communism and how pupils perceive the theme of migration.

A New Website, for a New Project
